Man shoots brother to death over refusal to pay N1,500 power bill

The police have detained a man and his wife in Anambra for his alleged killing of his brother when they argued over the payment of N1,500 electricity bill.

Peter Orji allegedly killed Godwin his elder brother during an argument over the payment of the bill at their residence in Uruagu, in Nnewi North Council Area of Anambra.

On Tuesday, the brothers were at home when they started arguing over Peter’s refusal to pay N1,500 for his monthly bill.

To get him to pay, it was learnt, the power supply to Peter’s flat in the house was disconnected.

A source in the community told The PUNCH that Peter, who was angered by the development, stormed into his flat, brought out a gun and shot his brother dead.

After committing the crime, he reportedly rushed to the nearest police station and surrendered himself to the police to avoid being lynched by an angry mob.

However, state Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, clarified that Peter was arrested contrary to claims he willingly surrendered himself to the police.

Ikenga said the wife of the suspect was first arrested at the crime scene and the couple are currently in police custody.

Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng has ordered the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation Ikenga added.
