One more body recovered from Lagos building collapse as death toll rises to 5

One more body was recovered on Monday from the rubbles of a seven-storey building, which collapsed on Oba Idowu Oniru Street, Lekki in Lagos on Sunday.

The building, which was under construction, caved in on Sunday morning and reportedly killed two people initially, but the death toll later rose to four before the latest recovery, officials said.

Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, South West Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the recovery of the body on Monday, which has raised the death toll to five.

The remote and immediate causes of the building’s collapse have yet to be ascertained.

The search and rescue operations were ongoing at the site of the collapsed building to possibly rescue the trapped victims.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Salako has resigned.

Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information made the announcement in a statement on Monday.

Omotoso said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has accepted the resignation.

The official noted that Salako’s exit “is a prelude to the restructuring of the Ministry and its agencies”.

Sanwo-Olu thanked him for his services and wished him success in his future endeavours.

The governor warned all players in the sector to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion.
