PDP Crisis: Ayu Survives But…

The National Executive Council of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wednesday, passed a vote of confidence in the National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu paving way for him to remain in office for the time being despite the crisis over his stewardship.

GWG reports that Ayu has been on the news over his alleged bias in the period leading to the national convention, a development that was worsened by his pronouncements at the peak of the crisis.

He was particularly opposed by the group of forces led by Governor Nyesom Wike who took second in the party presidential primaries.

Wike and many of those with him also faulted the emergence of Atiku as the presidential flag bearer, Iyorchia Ayu, Chairman of the party, and Sen. Walid Jibrin, chairman of the Board of Trustees, BoT, all from the northern part of the country.

The Rivers State governor and those with him accused the party of violating the principles of equity with the emergence of most of the key officers including the presidential candidate, national chairman, chairmna of the Board of Trustees, BoT, chairman of the Governors’ Forum among others from the North.

The group had insisted that Ayu should resign to enable a new chairman from the South to emerge.

Senator Walid Jibrin, the chairman of the BoT had similarly faulted the arrangement and on Thursday took the decision to step down paving way for for a former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, (from South-East) to become the new BoT Chairman.

Meanwhile, the NEC passed a vote of confidence on Ayu as national chairman paving Finally, the council passed a vote of confidence in Ayu. However, while NEC deliberated party activists were outside singing and drumming for Ayu to go indicating that he may have survived the battle in the Wadata Conference room but not on the streets where his foes have proved themselves over time to be formidable.
