Liverpool secured their first win in this season’s UEFA Champions League as they beat Ajax 2-1 at Anfield. It was an all-African scoring contest as Mohamed Salah scored first before a stunner from Mohammed Kudus levelled matters, then Joel Matip scored a last minute header to grind out a win for the home side.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have struggled since the start of the season and they were thumped 4-1 by Napoli in their champions League opener and were desperate for a win as they came up against Ajax who won 4-0 in their first group game. Mohamed Salah has misfired in his last four games across all competitions but he ended his goal drought by giving his team the lead with a well placed finish inside 17 minutes.

The Eridivise champions were showing no signs of throwing in the towel as they equalised 10 minutes later through a magnificent finish from Mohammed Kudus, who continued his fine goalscoring form with 5 goals in his last four games. Klopp’s men were on the verge of yet another disappointment but they were rescued by Joel Matip who popped up in the 89th minute to score the winner as well as his first champions League goal for Liverpool.

The five-time champions grinded out a much-needed win as they look to get back on track for the season.

Here are key facts from the game as Liverpool beat Ajax 2-1 in the UEFA champions league kicker;

• Mohamed Salah is now the second all-time highest goalscorer for an African player in the history of the UEFA champions League just 3 goals behind Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba

44 – Didier Drogba

41- Mohamed Salah

33 – Samuel Eto’o

• Only José Mourinho (6) has won more UEFA Champions League games against Ajax than Jürgen Klopp, who has won all five of his meetings with them in the competition.

• Joël Matip’s 89th minute winner was his 10th goal for Liverpool in all competitions with the Reds avoiding defeat in all 10 of those matches he’s scored in (W9 D1).
