Buhari Instructs NNPC To Complete East-West Road 4th Section
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited and its subsidiaries repair section 4 of the East-West Road.
Through the tax credit scheme, the road runs from Eleme roundabout to Onne Junction.
Buhari made the remarks on Thursday at the opening ceremony of the 5th National Council on the Niger Delta in Uyo.
“The East-West Road project which is now being handled by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, is the largest infrastructure project in Nigeria.
“It is a very strategic road, connecting the country’s busiest and foremost commercial cities in the region.
“This would be expeditiously addressed, considering the importance of the road to our national economy,” Buhari said.
Buhari, who was represented by Environment Minister Mohammed Abdullahi, assured that completing the East-West Road was a top priority for this administration.
The President stated that one of his administration’s primary mandates was to combat corruption.
He stated that the NNDC Forensic Audit had been submitted, and that the implementation of its recommendations had begun in stages.
“I hereby assure you that this process will eventually bring about the constitution of a new Board for the Commission, which is the desire of most stakeholders in the region,” he said.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr Umana Umana, stated that the conference’s goal was to encourage more and sustained collaboration with development partners and other stakeholders in the formulation and implementation of policies and programs aimed at improving life in the Niger Delta region.
Umana stated that the meeting was important for the ministry and other stakeholders because it provided an opportunity to assess collective engagement with the mandate of reinventing the Niger Delta Region.
The theme of the council meeting, he explained, was “Harnessing 21st Century Development Initiatives and Strategies for Greater Development Impacts in the Niger Delta Region.”
He added that the theme also addressed the urgent need for the Federal Government to constantly develop new strategies to help reposition the Niger Delta for a better economic standing in infrastructure, healthcare, manpower development, and security.
Umana stated that the ministry was collaborating with relevant agencies, development partners, International Oil Companies (IOCs), and other stakeholders on infrastructure development, social service investment, and institutional capacity building for the Niger Delta Region in order to fulfill its mandate.
Umana, who also serves as the Chairman of the Council, has promised to publish a compilation of projects undertaken by the ministry throughout the Niger Delta Region. (NAN)
