A rampant Arsenal thrashed Brentford 3-0 to return to the top of the Premier League table. Most of the damage was done before half-time with goals from William Saliba and Gabriel Jesus sending Mikel Arteta’s side well on their way to a first away victory against the Bees since 1947.

The Gunners wasted little time in taking the lead as William Saliba rose highest in the opponent box to flick in a Bukayo Saka corner kick and make it 1-0 to the visitors. The Frenchman opened the scoring with his second goal of the season, with both of those goals coming away from home.

A header was Brentford’s undoing once again shortly afterwards when Gabriel Jesus doubled the lead, nodding on Granit Xhaka’s sumptuously clipped cross as the Gunners went into the break 2-0 up.

The visitors were running riot, but the best was yet to come as summer signing Fabio Vieira marked his full debut with a 25-yard screamer, whipping a vicious effort off the post and into the back of the net. Arsenal saw out the rest of the game in style to secure an important three points which sees them top the table ahead of Man City and Tottenham Hotspur who are each a point behind.

Here are four key facts from the game as Arsenal beat Brentford 3-0;

•Aged 15 years and 181 days, Ethan Nwaneri (born 2007) is the first player under the age of 16 ever to play in the Premier League. He surpasses Harvey Elliott (16y 30d) as the competition’s youngest ever player.

• Bukayo Saka has been directly involved in 36 Premier League goals for Arsenal (18 goals, 18 assists), now the second-most of any player while aged 21 or younger for the club in the competition, overtaking Nicolas Anelka (35) and behind only Cesc Fàbregas (63).

• Of the 19 players to have scored in their first ever Arsenal start in the Premier League, Fábio Vieira is the first to have found the net from outside the box.

• Arsenal have now scored two or more headers in a Premier League game for just the third time since the start of the 2018-19 season:

 – vs Southampton (2021)

 – vs West Ham (2022)

 – vs Brentford (2022).
