Masquerades Invade Plateau Church, Flog Worshippers

Masquerades on Sunday morning invaded a Church in the Shikal community, Langtang South local government area of Plateau State and disrupted service as they flogged bewildered worshippers, destroying Church property.
It was gathered that the masquerades arrived at the Church premises while service was ongoing and started flogging worshippers as they scampered for safety.The invaders later turned to the Church’s musical instruments and other property and destroyed them.
The Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo confirmed the incident of the masquerade invasion of the church but gave no details.
He said, “The DPO of the area has confirmed that it is true, they are working on the situation and the area is calm. He said masquerades went to a Church and disrupted their activities. The investigation is ongoing, we will give full details when we have them.”
Meanwhile, the invasion of the Plateau Church by masquerades came as the Catholic Church announced the resumption of traditional handshake in churches, which was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
His Grace, Most Rev. Lucius IIwejur-Ugorji, the Archbishop of Owerri diocese said in a statement that worshippers were to resume the “Kiss of Peace” during Eucharistic and other events in the liturgical celebrations of the Church.
The statement was signed by Rev. Fr. Cosmas Uzoigwe Personal Assistant to the Archbishop, released through the National Director of Social Communications of the Church, Fr Mike Umoh, on Sunday in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the statement was addressed to all Priests and Lay faithful in Owerri Archdiocese.
