Osun Traditionalist Warns Oyo Kingmakers Against Manipulating Selection Of Alaafin
Oba Adetoyese Olakisan, a traditionalist based in Imesi-Ile, Osun State, has warned kingmakers in Oyo town against manipulating the selection process for the new Alaafin of Oyo.
Olakisan, also known as Oba Ogboni Agbaye, said in a statement obtained in Osogbo on Sunday warned that an incorrect appointment could have a negative impact on Yorubaland and not just Oyo.
He also insisted that Ifa (oracle) be allowed to choose the next Alaafin without interference, and that previous mistakes of appointing the wrong candidate as monarch be avoided in the selection of the new Alaafin.
“As a traditionalist and custodian of culture, it is important and equally expedient to publicly inform the government of Oyo state, Basorun of Oyo (the head of kingmakers), and all Oyomesi (the kingmakers) that the position of Alaafin of Oyo must not be politicized or monetised, but must be traditional,” the statement continued.
“There are many princes, but only one, not two, is a king.” Any error in the selection of the new Alaafin will spell disaster for Yorubaland, not just Oyo town.
“Any attempt to choose a king without consulting the Ifa oracle or manipulating the Ifa oracle’s directives will be a disaster waiting to happen. The exalted stool must be filled by someone who is well educated, historically rooted, and divinely appointed.”
