Commercial activities were grounded in Awka, Anambra State following the protest stage by tricycle operators over tax.

The operators were protesting the enforcement of a monthly N15,000 tax each operator by the State Government.

Keke operators in Anambra State are estimated to be over 40,000, which according to the operators, amounted to over N7.2 billion a year

But they were resisted by police operatives, who mobilised and teargassed residents at Aroma junction.

The operators complained over the constant harassment of their members by personnel of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra OCHA local vigilante, OCHA Brigade, a civil security outfit in the State among others.

During the protest, the operators including operators of shuttle buses refused to ferry passengers, leaving residents stranded.

They carried placards expressing their pains over the high tax by the State government

Some of the placards read: “Soludo wants to kill us. We say no to Soludo”; “We cannot pay N15,000”, “We are driving hire purchase” and “We are the breadwinner of the family, N15000 is too high”, among others.

Governor Soludo unveiled a new tax regime some months ago, which imposes a monthly payment of N15,000 to all tricycle operators in Anambra State..

The protesters made bonfires on roads in the city while many have been arrested.
