Kaduna Speaker Becomes Acting Governor As El-Rufai Jets Out

The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Zailani Yusuf has become the acting governor of the state following the absence of Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his deputy from the country.

Governor El-Rufai left the country for Europe on Thursday.

El-Rufai had in a letter dated September 20, 2022, to the Speaker stated that he was travelling to Europe from Thursday, September 22, 2022, to Saturday, October 1, 2022.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Hadiza Balarabe had before the present development travelled out to the United States where she is currently undertaking a leadership course at the Harvard Kennedy School.

In the letter to the speaker, El-Rufai stated that: “In accordance with the provisions of the constitution (Section 190) the Rt. Honourable Speaker, will oversee the affairs of the state in the absence of the Governor and the Deputy Governor.”

It was gathered that the speaker had confirmed his receipt of the letter from El-Rufai and his readiness to sit in as acting governor of the state pending the return to Kaduna of either the governor or the deputy governor.

GWG reports that many governors have in the past travelled out of jurisdiction without conforming to the constitutional stipulations on handing over.
