Just In: FG Moves To Break ASUU Strike, Orders Universities To Resume

Seven months after universities were shut following the strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors to re-open universities and resume academic activities immediately.

GWG reports that the directive was issued through the National Universities Commission in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

The letter was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.

It read in part:

“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”, the letter partly reads.

GWG reports that the universities were shut indefinitely in February after ASUU embarked on a strike over the failure of the Federal Government to allegedly honour agreements reached with the union in the past.

However, the Federal Government had recently taken the issue to the courts and the National Industrial Court last Wednesday ordered ASUU to call off the strike.’

GWG further reports that the Federal Government had through its counsel, James Igwe, prayed the court for an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the strike, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The government move to universities to resume comes in the wake of moves by ASUU to appeal the ruling on the strike.
