Bayelsa Flood: Five-Month-Old Baby Who Fell From Bed While Sleeping Drowns

A five-month-old baby and a seven-year-old boy drowned in floodwaters at Ogbogbene community in Bayelsa State’s Ekeremor Local Government Area it emerged in the latest account of the devastation of the flooding disaster in Nigeria.

According to reports, the toddler fell asleep and fell into the flooded water in their apartment, while the seven-year-old named Rachel drowned in the flooded surroundings.

A community leader, Chief Harrish Ayemi, confirmed the incident and described it as sad and one of the ugly experiences the flood has caused the people of the community.

He called for the entire community to be filled with sand, lamenting the fact that floods are a constant threat.

Meanwhile, floodwaters have submerged most of Otuoke Community, including former President Goodluck Jonathan’s country home in Bayelsa State’s Ogbia Local Government Area.

The raging flood has also submerged the Federal University Otuoke, FUO, the Federal Medical Centre, Otuoke Outreach, and other commercial and residential establishments.

Canoes are now being used by some community members to assess their homes.

Mr Azibalua Oru, one of the flood-affected residents, has urged the federal government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the state government to assist them, as the majority of them have been displaced.

The parents of the baby and the toddler who got drowned in floodwaters have been thrown into mourning.
