Battle For Afenifere Support: Obi Triumphs Tinubu As Pa Fasosranti Clears The Air

The scale has moved towards Peter Obi from Bola Tinubu in the revolving battle for the endorsement of Afenifere following the latest statement from Pa Rueben Fasoranti.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Pa Fasoranti alleged that some recent statements issued by him were misconstrued and misreported in the media to give the impression that he had taken over leadership of Afenifere from Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

GWG.NG reports that the mainstream of Afenifere had through Pa Adebanjo endorsed Peter Obi for the presidency snubbing Yoruba born Bola Tinubu.

However, Tinubu alongside some elements of Afenifere appeared to reverse that endorsement when they visited Fasoranti in his home in Akure and he prayed for the APC presidential candidate.

Fasoranti also appeared to endorse him as he was quoted as saying that he would defend Yoruba interest.

There were also reports that he had taken over the leadership of the group from Adebanjo, to whom he had ceded the leadership of the group on account of old age.

However, clarifying the issues in a statement on Thursday, issued through his Personal Assistant, Mr Adedapo Abiola, in Akure, Fasoranti said some sections of the media’s report were untrue on the matter.

The statement read, “It has come to Papa Reuben Fasonranti’s knowledge that some sections of the media, especially the social media, have been ascribing to him false statements designed to cause confusion and polarise Afenifere.

“I have Papa’s permission to say that he has not said Chief Ayo Adebanjo is no longer the acting leader of Afenifere nor that all future Afenifere meetings should henceforth be held at his residence in Akure.

“Papa’s main concern is the interest of the Yoruba in the complex political situation in Nigeria. It is also his concern that Afenifere should survive in dignity and remain a purveyor of the interest of the Yoruba race.”
