Kano Govt Opens Up On Reports Of Naira Notes Stashed In Ganduje’s House
The Kano State Government has strongly rebuffed insinuations that Governor Abdullahi Ganduje was one of the three governors on the watchlist of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly wanting to launder stashed old naira notes through table payment of salaries.
The state commissioner for information, Malam Muhammad Garba, in a statement on Sunday condemned the report in an online publication (Not GWG.NG) which he claimed lacked texture and investigative depth.
The statement indicated that “while the anti-graft agency did not mention the identity of the governors, Sahara Reporters went ahead to make such false reference.”
While noting that the story that Governor Ganduje stashed naira notes was either the imagination of the authors or a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the governor.
Garba pointed out that Ganduje had not acquired the billions of naira stashed away funds involved that could be used to engage in the dreary process of table payment of workers’ salary in this era of e-banking services.
According to the state commissioner, Kano has been one of the few states in the federation consistently paying workers’ salary, even as at “the time of the release of the false report by Sahara Reporters, posting of the October salary had commenced.”
The commissioner therefore called on Saharareporters to retract the story failing which the government would take legal action for redress.
GWG.NG reports that the chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa had recently in an interview disclosed that the commission was watching three governors who he claimed were working to launder money through the payment of workers’ salaries through table payment as a way to exchange the naira notes for the redesigned notes.
