Fayemi Accused As Ekiti Lawmakers Impeach Speaker Aribisogan

Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Monday impeached the Speaker, Gboyega Aribisogan a day after the former speaker accused immediate past governor of the state, Dr Kayode Fayemi of masterminding the plot to imeach him.

GWG.ng reports that the lawmakers, thereafter, elected Olubunmi Adelugba, as the new speaker during a closed-door plenary session on Monday.

Seventeen out of the 25 members impeached the lawmaker representing Ikole constituency in Ekiti as the speaker and suspended him indefinitely.

The Ekiti Assembly Complex had been sealed as members were embroiled in a leadership tussle following the death of the former speaker, Funminiyi Afuye. 

Earlier, armed policemen and other security operatives were seen around the assembly as lawmakers held a closed-door plenary session. 

The stern-looking security operatives barred both journalists and other visitors from gaining entry into the assembly complex.

Some politicians were also seen in groups around the complex discussing the leadership tussle rocking the state assembly.

GWG.NG reports that earlier on Sunday that the impeached speaker had accused the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Kayode Fayemi of pushing for his impeachment saying that the former governor never wanted him as speaker.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Politics on Channels Television, Aribisogan, while accusing Fayemi of masterminding the plot to impeach him said:

“The majority of members of Assembly voted for me but few of them who felt perhaps I did not follow the directive of the former governor, Dr Fayemi, thought that they would make the state ungovernable for even the administration.“I didn’t have any quarrel with him. I sent a message to him even last night asking, ‘What is happening? Am I no longer one of your loyalists? Why did you not congratulate me?’

“Up till now that I’m speaking with you, he has not done anything. Otherwise, he has been going around calling our members to go and impeach me tomorrow. That is the truth.“As I’m speaking with you, seven of our members are locked up in Fem Guest House in Ado Ekiti, planning on how to impeach me tomorrow in cahoots with some of his former aides like the former commissioner for justice.”
