A brace from Oliver Giroud, the oldest player to ever represent France and additions from Rabbiot and Mbappe gave the defending champions a 4-1 victory over 2018 foes Australia in their Group D opening tie on Tuesday in the World Cup tournament.

The prospects for an upset after the famous victory of Saudi Arabia over Argentina were raised earlier in the first half when Australia took the lead over France in the tenth minute with a goal from Goodwin at the 10th minute.

However, France took the shock with stoicism and came back forcefully to fully dominate the game.

Rabbiot levelled up for France in the 27th minute before Giroud took France ahead five minutes later.

Mbappe made it three in the 68th minute before Giroud hit his second in the 71st minute. There were many misses for France but that would not have been noticed after they put in four behind the Aussies.

GWG.NG reports that Giroud at 36 is the oldest player ever to represent France in the World Cup and he has now equaled Thiery Henry’s record of 51 goals for the France national team.

With the tournament just opening the prospects he would overtake the record is now very real.

With the defeat of Australia, France is now having a commanding lead of Group D in the first matches in the World Cup.
