Controversy Over Court Judgment On Edo PDP Candidates List Deepens As Exco Kicks

Controversy over the judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal over the correct list of candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Edo State was on Monday deepening as brickbats between the two major factions over the judgment continued.

GWG.NG reports that the Court of Appeal had in its judgment affirmed the appeal lodged by the Dan Orbih led faction of the party as meritorious. However, the court had at the same time flagged the appeal upon the fact that the records of the judgment of the lower court which gave victory to the Godwin Obaseki faction were not properly transmitted.

Each side has since the judgment came out last Friday been taking turns to showcase the judgment as favouing it.

In the latest development, the mainstream of the party aligned to Orbih in a statement made available alleged a plot to undermine the judgment of the Court of Appeal.

In a statement issued by the deputy chairman of the party, Harrison Omagbon, he said:

This statement is for Edo State indigenes and the general public to take note. Information reaching us from reliable sources clearly indicates that:

1.           Certain elements and enemies of democracy have been putting pressure on the Federal Court of Appeal officials sitting in Benin City, to change its already delivered judgment of 22nd of November 2022, in favour of the ‘Gov. Obaseki candidates’.

2.           Several comments and messages on social media have also exposed the boasts and threats of many of their supporters, that certain sums of money have been set aside and will be deployed this week to reverse the legal position.

3.           It is pertinent to note that all parties to the suit have been given certified true copies of the judgment, which cannot be altered.

4.           We call on all who are involved in this clandestine act, to desist forthwith, as such despicable act is capable of bringing down the Judiciary. We must remember that the Judiciary is the last hope of the common man in Nigeria.

5.           We advise all affected by the judgment to take necessary legal steps to seek redress in areas of their disagreement. Asking same court to reverse itself on a judgment given, will amount to the court sitting as an appellate court over its own judgment.

We therefore call on all lovers of democracy as well as party faithful, to take note of this ugly development.

GWG.NG reports that the controversy over the court judgment on the Edo PDP candidates’ list is set to drag as the two sides seek refuge in the Supreme Court.
