World Cup: 10-Man Cameroon Defeat Brazil, Crash Out

Cameroon became the first African country to defeat Brazil in the senior World Cup tournament when a ten-man team of the former African champions defeated the samba boys 1-0.

However, the victory over Brazil was not enough for Cameroon to progress to the next round as Switzerland edged out the Africans having defeated Serbia 3-2.

GWG.NG reports that the goal from Cameroon was also the first goal to be conceded by the Brazilians in the ongoing World Cup tournament in Qatar.

Besides, it is also the first time that Brazil has lost a game in the group stages in 17 games in the World Cup.

Brazil was by far the dominant team in the game and put the Africans under pressure from the first minute of the game but the Cameroonian goalkeeper, arguably, the man of the match parried off several shots at goal by the Brazilians.

Vincent Aboubakar’s header in the 92nd minute was the winner but his joy immediately turned to disappointment as he was given a second yellow card for taking his shirt off.

Cameroon had acquitted themselves well throughout as Bryan Mbuemo brought an outstanding save from Manchester City’s Ederson, deputising for Liverpool keeper Alisson, but Switzerland’s victory over Serbia ended their chances of reaching the last 16.

With his side having already qualified for the next round of the World Cup after their first two games, Brazil coach Tite made 10 changes and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli took the chance to impress with a fine performance in which he was thwarted on several occasions by Cameroon keeper Devis Epassy.

The pre-tournament favourites finished top of Group G despite the loss and now meet South Korea in the knockout phase after their dramatic late win against Portugal saw them edge out Uruguay, who beat Ghana, on goals scored.
