Fervent hopes of seeing the progress of Nigerian blood progress in the World Cup diminished on Tuesday after Portugal humbled Switzerland in the round of 16 by 6-1.

Manuel Akanji born of a Nigerian father and a Swiss mother scored the only goal for Switzerland in the humiliation of the European country by Portugal which played most of the game without star player Christano Ronaldo.

Noah Okafor, born of an Igbo father and a Swiss mother was also an effective hand in the game but his efforts could not help a well organized Portugal.

A hat-trick from Gonçalo Ramos in the 17th, 51st and 67th minutes and a goal each from Pepe (33’minutes), Guerreiro (55’minutes), Rafael Leão (90’+2min) was the difference that helped to project Portugal over the less fancied Switzerland.

GWG.NG reports that Portugal had not been expected to play as they did on Tuesday and approached the game against the Nigerian spiced Switzerland team with a better organization that they did in the group stages of the World Cup.

Earlier in the day, a shocker came when Morocco piped more fancied Spain by penalties putting the hope of Africa and the Arab world into the quarterfinals.

Morocco is now expected to meet Portugal in the next round.
