PDP Crisis: Okowa, Wike, South-South Governors Meet On Thursday

In a move apparently aimed towards resolving the lingering crisis in the party, the Chief Dan Orbih led South-South zonal executive of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has scheduled a meeting with all governors and governorship candidates for Thursday, December 15, 2022.

GWG.ng reports that it would be the first meeting in a long time between the different tendencies within the party following the outcome of the national convention and the emergence of Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as presidential candidate and running mate respectively.

Governor Nyesom Wike lost the ticket and was passed over by Atiku in his choice of a running mate.

The development has led to a crisis with some PDP stakeholders peeved over the emergence of a Northern presidential candidate after eight years of Muhammadu Buhari presidency. Wike is leading a group of five governors and other stakeholders who have aligned themselves against Atiku.

Since the crisis Governor Okowa and Wike have had few interactions with Wike boycotting several of the functions organized by the Senator Iyorchia Ayu led leadership of the party.

A statement issued by the South-South PDP zonal publicity secretary, Bishop Etim Ante on the planned meeting with the governors, candidates with hopes of addressing the crisis, stated thus:

Arising from the Zonal Working Committee meeting presided over by the National Vice Chairman, South South, High Chief Dan Orbih, the following resolution were reached.

a.           The Zonal Working Committee reviewed activities of organs and structures of the Party in the zone, and hereby commend the leadership of the Party at all levels for their unwavering support and commitment to the growth and development of the Party.

b.           The Zonal Working Committee is conscious of the challenges within the Party and the need for cohesion and harmony for positive results in the 2023 general elections.

c.           In view of the above, the Zonal Working Committee further resolves to meet with all PDP Governors and Governorship candidates of the Party in the Zone in an emergency meeting slated to hold on Thursday, 15th December, 2022 at the Zonal Head office of the Party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at 10am prompt.
