PDP Crisis Polarises Southwest As Adeleke – Makinde Gulf Widens
Fears of the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP polarizing the party in the Southwest manifested on Thursday after Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State and some notable chieftains from the region stayed away from the flag-off of the party’s campaign in Oyo State.
GWG.ng reports that besides Adeleke, the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu and his Lagos State counterpart, Olajide Adediran (Jandor) were also absent at the event which was held at Mapo Hall, Ibadan on Thursday.
It would be recalled that Governor Adeleke who is the only other PDP governor in the Southwest was a notable presence at the Christmas Carol service hosted by the Akwa Ibom State Government where he danced away to the admiration of the audience.
Despite being present at the Uyo Christmas Carol service 606 kilometers from Oshogbo, the Osun State capital, GWG.ng reports that Governor Adeleke was not present for the flag off of his neigbourhing governor’s campaign in Ibadan, a distance of 96 kilometers.
The absence of Governor Adeleke could be said to be a reciprocation of the absence of Governor Makinde at the swearing-in ceremony of the new Osun governor last November.
Adeleke and Makinde belong to different tendencies in the PDP. While Adeleke is supportive of the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar who graced his inauguration, Makinde is part of the G5 Integrity Group in the PDP.
The absence of Jandor, the Lagos State PDP flag bearer could also be traced to the notable presence of Governor Nyesom Wike who had last year endorsed the APC governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and snubbed Jandor.
Nevertheless, the G5 governors made a conspicuous presence at the flag-off with all four other governors present to give support to Makinde.
GWG.ng reports that Governor Makinde is the only PDP governor in the Southwest in the G5 and the crisis in the party has put him at odds with Adeleke.
