‘Stingy’ Obi Damns Tinubu, Let’s Talk About Corruption
Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has rebuffed taunts about being too stingy thrown at him by his APC rival, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu challenging him rather to a debate on developmental issues that have suppressed the growth of the country, particularly on corruption.
Giving his closing remarks at the Channels Television townhall on Sunday evening, Obi said he had used his position as governor of Anambra State to elevate the state’s development status and could take pride in such and not on the banter of being stingy or not.
GWG.ng reports that Tinubu had at a rally in Akure, Ondo State at the weekend dismissed his major rivals Obi as being too stingy and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP as Mr Privatise.
Responding to the taunt in his closing remarks, Obi said:
“I was number one in education, and this was by UNDP and by WAEC. I won Bill Gates prize in health and again this was not marked by Nigeria. I had the best road network.
“And in terms of fighting poverty, go and check, ask Evelyn Oputu, (ex-Managing Director of Bank of Industry) I was the first to go to Bank of Industry, to put in money and you will support my micro small businesses which is what the governors are doing today. I and Evelyn Oputu started that.
“Go and ask Magnus Kpakol (Special Adviser on Poverty Alleviation) who was in charge of poverty alleviation I was number one, I am calling names of people.”
In a direct challenge of being too stingy as implied by Tinubu, Obi said:
“It is good that when my opponents talk, let us talk about corruption. One of the things that is killing Nigeria today is the Corruption Perception Index and that is measured on how you manage public assets, nepotism, how you share land, how you manage everything.
“I have challenged everyone go and see anywhere a kobo of Anambra State money is missing since it has now become an issue. When people have stolen all the money and impoverished the people and you are now questioning a man who left the money without anybody telling me to leave it and go,” Obi said in rebuffing the taunt by Tinubu about him being too stingy.
