Dual Citizenship: Peter Obi Faces Disqualification Suit

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, is currently the target of a disqualification lawsuit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja arising from claims of alleged dual citizenship.

The National Rescue Movement (NRM) brought the case against Obi alleging, among other things, that the presidential candidate is not qualified for the most prestigious post in Nigeria due to his dual citizenship.

In the lawsuit filed against Obi, the plaintiff is asking the court to rule that he should be disqualified from running for president due to the violation of the 1999 Constitution.

The Labour Party candidate was charged with violating sections 1 and 137 of the Nigerian Constitution by obtaining citizenship of Dallas, Texas, the United States of America, according to the lawsuit with the file number FHC/ABJ/CS/1842/2022.

Through its attorney, Mohammed Danjuma, the party requested a permanent injunction preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from granting Peter Obi any right or privilege to run for president.

Peter Obi was alleged to have freely earned Dallas citizenship in a 14-paragraph statement submitted in support of the lawsuit, and Mr. Eric Johnson, the mayor of Dallas, gave him a certificate of citizenship. To support its argument, the party provided a photo and video of the presentation of the citizenship certificate

Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo, however, berated the plaintiff for not being able to serve the defendants with the original summons when the case came up on Monday. Justice Ekwo then set the case for mention on February 10 and threatened to dismiss it if the plaintiff failed to serve Peter Obi with court papers before the delayed date.

INEC, Peter Obi, and the Labour Party are respectively the first, second and third defendants in the lawsuit for the disqualification of Obi over his alleged dual citizenship.
