The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may consider using body odour as a means of verifying voters during the 2023 election.

This controversial proposal was raised by INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, during a speech at the Chatham House in London.

Yakubu revealed that an INEC official had suggested the idea of using body odor as a biometric, stating that it is a unique and distinctive characteristic that can be used to identify individuals.

The INEC chairman acknowledged that the idea may sound unusual, but explained that it is similar to how dogs recognize their owners by their body odour.

However, Yakubu emphasized that the commission is not yet ready to implement this idea and will be considering it with caution.

He stated, “I said please not yet, let’s make haste slowly. But when he explained it to me, it sounded logical. I agreed with him, but for the election, let’s wait. It’s not the right time.”

The use of body odour as a means of voter verification by INEC has sparked debate and raised concerns about privacy and the potential for discrimination.

Critics argue that this method may be unreliable and open to manipulation, and that it could disproportionately affect marginalized communities.
