Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia state Governor has declared Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24, 2023, as public holidays in the state to enable residents to collect their permanent voter cards, PVCs ahead of the forthcoming general election.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chris Ezem.

The governor ordered that all public offices and markets be closed and urged residents to use the opportunity to visit the Independent National Electoral Commission’s offices or collection centres where they registered to collect their PVCs.

“The executives of the various markets in the state are directed to ensure strict compliance on the closure of their various markets or be prepared to face appropriate sanctions.

“Banks and those on essential duties are not affected by this directive,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, besides the news of the declaration of a public holiday for the collection of PVCs in the state, a face-off between the provost of Abia State College of Education Technical, Arochukwu, (ASCETA), Dr Philips Nto and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) over the sack of a lecturer is worsening.

It is also taking on political undertones.

The union accused Dr Nto of witch-hunt in the sacking of the lecturer, Mr Kevin Egesi, a union leader and called for his reinstatement.

Dr Nto told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, however, that Egesi was redundant and was fired as part of a reorganisation going on in the college since two years ago.

The provost maintained that because of the redundancy, Egesi had time to engage in partisan politics and was holding town hall meetings with governorship candidates with the exclusion of that of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“Even if he is acting on the mandate of COEASU to interview or hold town hall meetings with governorship candidates, courtesy demands that the PDP candidate ought to be there also.

“But he did that without the PDP governorship candidate,’’ Nto said.
