International flights into and out of Lagos, Nigeria were being put on hold on Monday morning following a strike by workers of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, NAHCO Plc embarked on strike.

GWG.ng reports that NAHCO handles critical services for many international airlines including check-in, boarding, ramp services among others for the airlines. Among the airlines more affected by the NAHCO strike and who depend on NAHCO for critical services are Qatar, Air France/KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, Delta Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Turkish Air among others.

It was gathered that the strike action by the NAHCO staff related to demands for salary raise.

An affected passenger and aviation expert, Alex Nuba told The Punch that NAHCO staff in the early hours of Monday walked out of the international airport, saying they were on strike and would not handle any passenger.

“Even the Qatar flight I’m traveling with this morning landed and has returned to Doha as there’s no one to handle them,” Nwuba said.

According to him passengers were frustrated as they have been kept outside to avoid a crisis and no information, announcements or emails was sent to passengers.

GWG.ng reports that NAHCO was conceived by the Nigerian government but has since been privatised and the strike action grounding international flights into and out of Lagos is expected to blight the country’s image.
