Omo-Agege homecoming

Inside details that provoked the defection to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP of the erstwhile Delta State secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Otunba Nick Ovuakporie are beginning to emerge.

Sources close to Ovuakporie who was very handy in Omo-Agege’s takeover of the APC structure say that he had become peeved over his perceived marginalisation after what they claimed as his yeoman’s role in displacing the rivals of the Deputy Senate President in the power equation in the APC structure in Delta State.

GWG.ng reports that Omo-Agege had in the run-up to the last congresses of the APC in Delta muscled out his rivals and former collaborators including Chief Great Ogboru, Olorogun Festus Keyamo, Speaker Emeritus of the State House of Assembly Victor Ochei, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh among others

As a source disclosed prior to the APC congresses in 2021, Ogboru had secured the collaboration of the team designated to conduct the congresses. However, unbeknown to him Omo-Agege had provided a security cover for the team and Ovuakporie had lodged the team at Vienna International Hotel, DBS Road Asaba.

Ovuakporie it was learnt had planted a sentry to monitor the team inside another room within the hotel. It was gathered that members of the team had in the night tried to dash to another hotel apparently provided by the Ogboru faction but the sentry alerted Ovuakporie who promptly arrived to mount a blockade with policemen around the hotel. He stopped the team from making a dash in their Sienna vehicle. Ovuakporie it was gathered also blocked them with his own Sienna and was able to wrest the election materials from the team. That was the pivotal moment Omo-Agege with the materials in his kitty was able to populate the Delta State structure of the party with his allies.

Ovuakporie who was at that time an aide of the Deputy Senate President, DSP was appointed Secretary of the state chapter of the APC.

Another aide of Omo-Agege’s Elder Omeni Sobotie was made chairman with several other allies of the DSP taking strategic positions in the party structure.

Keyamo subsequently strongly protested as he dismissed the executives as houseboys and house girls of Omo-Agege’s household.

Though Keyamo has reconciled with Omo-Agege, many others including Ogboru left the party leaving Omo-Agege in full control.

However, a source disclosed that in recent months Ovuakporie had progressively seen his role in the party diminished with the secretary of the APC Governorship Committee, Dr. U.E. Okolocha taking over his duties.

The last straw it was gathered was when a meeting was conveyed by Dr Okolocha for strategic party officials in the office of the state secretary without his (Ovuakporie’s) knowledge. He was alas invited for the meeting on January 26, 2023.

Sources close to the former secretary say that he was also embittered by the failure of Omo-Agege to cite any federal project in Isoko land despite reminders from Ovuakporie.

GWG.ng is unable to confirm insinuations of any financial inducement by the PDP though it was gathered that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa met with him on the eve of the defection. Among those who were present was Hilary Ibegbulem, the governor’s right-hand man.

While the defection of Ovuakporie is being hailed as a major disaster for the APC with claims that many other disgruntled partisans are waiting in the wings to jump ship, the APC is also said to be celebrating the defection of many PDP faithful to the opposition party in the state.

However, a senior official of the Omo-Agege campaign told GWG.ng that the defection of Ovuaokporie was a non-event.

“He left alone and you can see that since he left it is as if nothing happened. Nobody left with him and everything is going on as usual,” the senior Omo-Agege campaign official told GWG.ng.

“How can he be complaining of the usurpation of his duties or do you see the chairman of the party complaining of the takeover of his duties by the campaign committee chairman,” the official asked.
