In Move To Save Senate Presidency Dream, PDP Senator Dumps Atiku For Obi

In a major setback for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Senator Uche Ekwunife has dumped him for Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in a last minute move to save her re-election bid.

GWG.ng reports that Senator Uche Ekwunife, PDP, Anambra Central made the open support at a stakeholders’ meeting at Agulu town hall on Sunday.

The decision by Ekwunife to dump Atiku for Obi follows her earlier pledges first to Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and the PDP hierarchy to back the PDP presidential flagbearer with her full chest despite her long relationship with Obi who she had in the past referred to as her political mentor.

GWG.ng reports that the Ekwunife camp had been boisterously looking forward to her becoming Senate President with a PDP majority in the Senate.

However, against the background of mounting support for Obi that Ekwunife recalibrated her political permutations last Sunday at the stakeholders’ meeting.

Speaking in Igbo, she said: “Vote for me in PDP. In the presidential election, we all know where we are going to vote. We are politicians. We know this game very well. It’s on our fingertips. Peter Obi is our son and my mentor; we can’t work against him.

“But what I’m asking you is to vote for me in PDP. At the presidential level we all know who is our preferred candidate. That one is not in dispute. It’s settled. She spoke in Igbo.

Her assertion on Sunday came after she led a delegation of Southeast political leaders to Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the PDP presidential running mate last August and pledged to mobilise the Southeast for the Atiku/Okowa ticket. She followed that up at the PDP presidential flag-off at Uyo last October where she said that Nigeria did not need a kindergarten as a president.

Though she did not mention Obi who is regarded to have supported her in her past fights in Anambra State, the reference was easily linked to him in viral videos that have circulated since.

GWG.ng reports that following the development, the Ekwunife camp in a statement issued through her media assistant, Mr Kingsley Ubani claimed that the video was a misrepresentation of what she  said at the Uyo rally.

“The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife PhD, earlier today (in October) stated that Nigeria needs a President that can transit its economy from consumption to production, adding that the country does not need a kindergarten President.

“Ekwunife who spoke at the PDP Presidential Campaign flag-off in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state was addressing Nigerians on the need to support her Party’s Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“The interpretation in some or that Senator Ekwunife was referring to the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi or the candidate of any other political party in her speech, is wrong.

“Senator Ekwunife’s statements were in line with the fact that Nigeria needs a President who is well rounded, and has the resume’, experience, mindset and qualifications to lead the country out of the woods.”

GWG.ng reports that the decision by Senator Ekwunife to dump Atiku for Obi is largely seen as salvaging her re-election prospects and possible bid for the office of Senate President.
