Police Begin Arrest Of Naira Traders, Abusers

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has commenced the arrest of naira dealers and abusers around the nation, it was disclosed on Friday.

A statement issued by the force’s public relations officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the move was in line with federal regulations.

According to the spokesperson, the operation is meant to uphold the currency-related laws of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007. Inspector-General Usman Baba gave the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) and the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) the go-ahead to start working.

The move aims to “arrest and prosecute those engaged in the sale or abuse of naira notes,” all of the officers and members of the units have been put on high alert.

All supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners in charge of Commands and Formations received a similar directive from the IGP to fully enforce Sections 20 and 21 of the CBN Act, 2007.

The law makes it unlawful to hawk, sell, trade, spray, march, forge, or counterfeit bank notes, as well as to refuse to accept the naira as payment and tamper with coins or notes. The police urged everyone to cooperate and committed to uphold all rules and regulations without regard for the enabling Acts of other security agencies.

According to the statement, anyone who violates the CBN Act’s or any other existing Nigerian statutes shall be subject to the law, the police statement said on the arrest of violators on extant laws concerning the naira.
