Two Nigerian Men Get Life Sentences For Raping 14yr Old Girl

Two men were given life sentences by the Ado Ekiti Division of the Ekiti State High Court for raping a 14-year-old girl. On May 13, 2022, Salau Adams (21) and Odeleye Tobi (21), the defendants, were charged with one count of rape.

The indictment stated that the defendants conspired to rape a 14-year-old girl on February 28, 2022, in Awo Ekiti, Ekiti State, in violation of Sections 421 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State and Section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The victim said in her police report that she was selling fried meat on that particular day. Adams and Tobi pretended to bring out money when they bought meat for N100 each, but Adams actually pulled out a black handkerchief. I made the decision to leave and tell my mum about them. When I turned, Tobi picked me up and carried me while Adams put the black handkerchief over my lips. They brought me behind their house to a neighboring bush. Tobi and Adams were the ones that had sex with me first. They then took off running. I returned home in tears and wearing clothes stained with blood.

Adeola Arogundade, the prosecution, produced eight witnesses and presented the statements of the defendants and a medical report as exhibits. Through their attorney, the defendants requested that the court temper justice with mercy, arguing that the young offenders may still contribute to society.

The two adolescents were given life sentences by Justice Olalekan Olatawura, who stated that the crime of child rape and defilement in this jurisdiction is quickly taking a terrifying dimension.

“It is the responsibility of the court to deliver the appropriate message to potential rapists”. stated Justice Olatawura

The only way to deter this heinous and animalistic behavior is to punish anyone found guilty harshly. As a result, I maintain that the prosecution has established beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendants had sex with the victim without her will. It is obvious from the established circumstances that the defendants planned to perpetrate the rape crime, and I hold that this is the case.
