Nextier Poll: Obi Beats Tinubu, Atiku In Their Home States
Peter Obi has a slight lead over Atiku Abubakar in Adamawa and a commanding lead over Bola Tinubu in Lagos according to the latest face-to-face Nextier opinion poll that puts the Labour party presidential candidate as the most favoured person to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming election.
The poll conducted by Nextier which puts Obi at 37% nationally with Atiku Abubakar trialing at 27% and Tinubu third at 24%, according to the pollsters is, however, expected to end in a run-off.
Nextier, an Africa-focused consulting firm conducted the polls on Friday, January 27, 2023 using a sample size of 3,000 respondents drawn from urban and rural communities.
According to the details of the poll Obi would sweep the polls in the South-South and Southeast and also win in Lagos which is the home state of the APC presidential candidate. According to the poll, Obi is expected to win the poll with 39.4% of the poll beating Tinubu, to second place with 25.2%.
Obi according to the poll is also expected to push Atiku to third place in a tight race where Tinubu is said to be leading with 33.8% and Obi with 30.8% and Atiku with 29.2%
However, Obi has failed to get the 25% in most of the states in the North indicating a possible run-off. Surprisingly, the poll showed that Obi would get 25% in only Katsina in the Northwest and in the Northeast, only in Adamawa.
In the North-Central he is expected to win in Benue and Nasarawa and get the 25% in the remaining states with the notable exception of Niger where Atiku is expected to win.
Rabiu Kwakwanso, the NNPP candidate is expected to win Kano and none of the other parties is projected to cut 25% from the state.
Obi, however, is expected to make a clean sweep of the Southeast and South-South. Atiku is expected to get 25% in only Delta and Akwa Ibom. Tinubu like Atiku is not expected to get up to 25% in the Southeast.
Tinubu is according to the poll struggling in the Southwest with the APC flag bearer expected to win only in Ondo while Atiku is projected to win Osun. Obi according to the poll in a shock to ethnic loyalties is expected to win in Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos and Ogun.
The Obi stride in the Nextier poll as with other opinion polls has been dismissed by his rivals who say that the Labour candidate lacks the structure to deliver victory.
