Engr. Buba Galadima has disclosed that a governor in the Northwest is keeping N22 billion of the old naira notes in cash and unable to change it.

Galadima, a political associate of the New Nigeria Political Party, NNPP presidential candidate, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso spoke in an interview with Daily Trust published on Sunday.

While noting that much of the criticism against the naira redesign policy was being fueled by those who had been keeping ill-gotten wealth, he nevertheless expressed concern over the fate of the lower class who are being negatively affected by the implementation of the policy.

He said:

“Now, we are torn between two lines: the government said they were doing this because a lot of people had amassed wealth, I mean hoarded currency in their private houses. I agree.

“Yes, N22billion of the old currency stacked in his house as I speak to you. He knows himself. And the security agencies know.”

On why the security agencies have not impounded the cash, he said:

“Well, the trap is for him to go out to change the money. How can one man have N22bn in cash he accumulated through corruption? My worry is the ordinary man in Yobe, Tulotulo, who has got only N1,000 as capital. I would rather allow the system to be cheated by one individual because that man’s money is legitimate money.”

He, however, refused to disclose the identity of the governor he alleged was keeping N22 billion old notes in his custody.
