Naira Scarcity Crisis: Pregnant Woman Dies In Kano

A pregnant woman in Kano, Nigeria identified as Shema’u Sani Labara has reportedly died due to alleged medical negligence by doctors at the Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital.

According to the woman’s husband, her death was caused by a delay in funds transfer as a result of the new naira policy crisis.

The Kano State Government had recently warned against rejecting old naira notes, threatening to shut down and revoke the licenses of businesses found to be rejecting them.

However, despite this warning, some institutions, including hospitals, have reportedly been rejecting old notes, causing difficulties for people in need of urgent medical care.

The woman’s husband, Malam Fancy recounted that he took his wife to the hospital when she was about to deliver, but the hospital refused his old naira notes and also had no POS.

He was then asked to deposit the money in their account, which he did via a transfer. However, the doctors did not attend to his wife for more than three hours, despite her condition worsening.

After three hours, the hospital received the transfer and admitted the woman. It was discovered that she could not deliver by herself and needed an operation.

The husband agreed to pay for the operation via another transfer, which again took several hours to process. The operation was finally carried out, but both the baby and the mother tragically died.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital denied the allegations, but other patients in the hospital reportedly confirmed difficulties with payment for medical services.

The Hospital Management Board has launched an investigation into the matter.
