We Have Restored Order To Lagos – Police Say
The Police in Lagos have restored order after clashes broke out in selected areas of Agege and Mile 12 on Friday morning.
No reason has been given for the unrest but the police was quick to confirm the unrest.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has confirmed the unrest.
Responding to a tweet asking the PPRO to confirm the rumour of the unrest early in the day, Hundeyin replied, “It is true. Our men are there. Reinforcement units have been deployed. Stay safe out there as we closely monitor and manage the situation,” the Lagos police spokesman said in confirming the unrest that rocked Mile 12 area.
GWG.ng, however, reports that the police spokesman in a later tweet sometime around 9.00 am confirmed that normalcy had been restored to most areas of the city.
He said:
The police spokesman also confirmed that reinforcements were being poured into the affected areas to check the eruption of violence.
GWG.ng had earlier reported that the Mile 12 area of Lagos around Ikorodu Road experienced a period of unrest on Friday morning, with gunshots being heard throughout the neighborhood the police confirmed.
According to eyewitnesses, sporadic shootings were carried out by hoodlums, causing panic and confusion among residents.
The reason behind the unrest is currently unclear, with conflicting reports suggesting different causes.
Some sources claimed that the unrest was a result of a protest related to the scarcity of the Nigerian naira, while others have suggested that it was due to a clash between the police and local thugs.
Videos shared on social media showed cars attempting to leave the area, with one person heard saying, “Everybody is turning back to Ikorodu, there is shooting, heavy shooting.”
The claim by the Police to have restored order to the affected areas of Lagos is now enabling commuters to go about their businesses.
