Nigerian musician Peter Okoye has taken to Instagram to clarify his stance on supporting Labour party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The musician, who is known for being part of the popular duo P-Square, was accused by some of supporting the former Anambra governor based solely on tribal sentiments.

In his post, Okoye made it clear that he is supporting Peter Obi, not because of his ethnic background, but because he believes in his vision for the country.

He stated that even if Obi was replaced with vice president Yemi Osinbanjo and he was running against Orji Uzor Kalu, he would gladly vote for Yemi Osinbanjo.

The musician’s post stirred a number of reactions on the internet.

A user, Ifeoluwa Jason wrote:

“This message serves as a reminder to candidates themselves to focus on their policies and not to rely on ethnic or regional sentiments to win support. Nigeria’s future depends on the success of its democratic institutions, and politicians must work towards building a society that is united in its diversity”.

Another fan wrote: “Our country’s progress and success depend on looking beyond ethnic and regional affiliations and focusing on the issues that affect all citizens. It is important for politicians to focus on their policies and vision for the country, and for voters to do their research and vote based on what they believe is best for the country as a whole”.
