Real Madrid Legend Marcelo Returns To Boyhood Club Fluminense On Free Transfer

Real Madrid legend Marcelo Vieira has returned to his boyhood club Fluminense after 16 years in Europe.

The Brazilian’s contract was terminated at Olympiacos this season by mutual consent and he is now joined Brazilian side Fluminense as a free agent. The former Brazil international has signed a contract that will run until December 2024 with the option of a further year.

Marcelo previously played for Fluminense’s youth team between 2002 and 2005 before representing them at senior level as he made 30 appearances, during which he won the Campeonato Carioca and the Taca Rio with the club. After leaving Fluminense in 2007 he moved to Real Madrid and enjoyed a lengthy stay until 2022, playing over 500 times for Los Blancos.

During his time at Real, Marcelo won six LaLiga titles, five Champions Leagues and two Copa del Reys as well as four FIFA Club World Cups. On the international stage, Marcelo made 56 appearances for Brazil between 2006 and 2018. He was part of the squad that won the Confederations Cup in 2013.

GWG.ng reports that Marcelo was one of the greats that carved a solid reputation in Real Madrid, the club that gave him a global reputation.
