Anyim And Umahi: More Reasons Not To Trust A Politician

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on Thursday suspended erstwhile Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim from the party following allegations of anti-party activities.

GWG.ng reports that the suspension of Anyim followed internal issues in the Ebonyi State chapter of the party that were underlined by the collaboration between Anyim and Governor Dave Umahi that led to the trouncing of the PDP governorship candidate last weekend.

The collaboration between the notable Ebonyi politicians came against the background of the bitter quarrel between the two men over disparate political issues that came to a climax about two years ago when Anyim claimed the governor was after his life.

Anyim and many other political leaders had following the defection of Umahi to the All Progressives Congress, APC in November 2020, vowed to ensure that the DNA imprint of the state was sustained.

Anyim and several other leaders of the PDP felt at that time that after achieving much in the PDP, including serving as PDP chairman and deputy governor for two terms that it was uncharitable for Umahi to dump the party.

The animosity between both men continued until the shocking developments days to the March 18 governorship election when Anyim hosted Governor Umahi in his Ishiagu mansion where the deal to support the governor’s choice of successor was concretised.

GWG.ng reports that the deal follows the emergence of the Lagos based multi-billionaire, Dr Ifeanyi Odii as the PDP governorship candidate. Anyim and a number of leading PDP leaders were peeved over his emergence for at least two reasons.

Odii was alleged by some local party chieftains to have bought the ticket with his money. Second, the candidate is from Ebonyi South, the same senatorial district as Umahi and Anyim.

Anyim and Umahi felt that it was wrong for the successor to come from Ebonyi South, after eight years of the governorship seat in the South, and that became the basis of reconciliation between the two former political foes.

Odii’s emergence was seen as a violation of the unsigned but adopted Ebonyi charter of equity that guides the rotation of the governorship among the three senatorial zones.

It was based on the common aversion to the emergence of Odii that led Anyim and Umahi to reconcile and put away their differences. That led to Anyim reportedly giving massive support to the APC candidate Francis Nwafiru who won the election.

GWG.ng reports that on Election Day that Anyim was fully on ground and ensured that his unit, ward and local government went to the APC candidate.

So, Anyim who became senator, Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF on the platform of the PDP just like Umahi bruised the platform that brought them to political renown. The response from the PDP was to suspend Anyim on Thursday.

The reconciliation of the once bitter foe underlines more reasons not to trust a politician given the bitter quarrel between both men not too long ago.
