Emmaunuel Adebayor Retires From Football After 22-Year Career In 11 Clubs

Former Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor has announced his decision to retire from professional football after a 22-year career that took him through 11 football clubs.

The 39-year-old played for 11 clubs during that span which included big European teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. His time in the Premier League was most memorable as he scored 97 goals across three spells in England. He also won the 2008 African Footballer of the year while playing for Arsenal. After various spells across Europe, Adebayor decided to move back to his country where he ended his career with Togolese club Semassi.

Born in Togo to Nigerian parents, Adebayor decided to represent the country of his birth, and he did so superbly as he is currently Togo’s all-time top goalscorer with 32 goals in 85 appearances. He was also named Togo’s Footballer of the Year for five consecutive years between 2005 and 2009.

Adebayor was on the Togo team bus that was attacked by terrorists in 2010 as the team made their way to Angola for the African Cup of Nations tournament. Three people were killed and nine people were injured in the attack.

The decision of Emmanuel Adebayor to retire came as Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane became England’s all-time top goal scorer with 54 goals, as he scored a penalty in their 2-1 win over Italy at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium.
