2023 Nigeria Decides
After Election Losses, Ikpeazu Sacks Aides, Says Otti Will Settle Outstanding Workers’ Salaries
A month after losing his Senate bid and a week after losing his bid to plant a successor, Governor Okeize Ikpeazu of Abia State has sacked all his political appointees.
Those affected by the unceremonious sack include Special Assistants, Senior Special Assistants, Special Advisers and Technical Officers.
The secretary to the state government, Barrister Chris Ezem who announced the sack in a statement disclosed that the governor directed the State Accountant General to ensure immediate payment of March 2023 stipends to all the appointees.
The governor thanked them for their contributions and services to the state and wished them well in their future endeavours.
Meanwhile, besides the news of the sack of his political appointees, Governor Ikpeazu on Thursday night while speaking in a Channels Television interview said that he had done very well as governor and was leaving Abia as the safest and most stable state in the country.
In the interview Governor Ikpeazu agreed that his government owed salaries to parastatals but not to core civil servants. He said that just as he paid off the salaries owed by his predecessors that the next administration to be led by Dr Alex Otti would pay off the salaries of workers that he is unable to pay off.
The outgoing governor said that he could not be held liable for parastatals which received funding but failed to pay their workers or went ahead to recruit workers that they cannot pay.
He said that history and posterity will be fair on him.
