Plateau Assembly Crisis Deepens As Police Barricade Complex

The crisis in the Plateau State House of Assembly boiled over early on Wednesday morning leading to the sealing off of the premises of the legislative house by operatives of the State Police Command.

GWG.ng reports that the police action is not unconnected to the crisis in the assembly arising from the reinstatement by the courts of the former speaker of the house, Ayuba Abok who was impeached in October 2021 by his colleagues.

However, a court on Monday ruled that the impeachment was illegal and reinstated him.

Following the reinstatement, Abok on Tuesday proceeded to the legislative house and went to the speaker’s office which he met locked. After wandering for some time, he was allowed in and moved on to preside over the sitting of the house.

However, Yakubu Sanda who replaced him as speaker was not present.

GWG.ng reports that the house has now been thrown into two camps with some supporting Abok and others supporting Sanda.

On Wednesday morning a team of anti-riot police men arrived at the assembly complex sometime around 5.00 a.m. and took over the legislative complex. They policemen then barricaded the main entrance.

The executive branch of the Plateau State government is yet to speak on the development in the assembly or the barricade erected by the police.
