Labour Party Crisis Deepens As Thugs Invade National Headquarters

The crisis in the leadership of Labour Party deepened on Thursday after its embattled national chairman, Mr Julius Abure reported that thugs had broken into the national secretariat of the party.

The secretariat is located in the Utako District of the FCT and close to the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ building and not too far away also from the Utako Police Station.

Vanguard quoted Abure as alleging the invasion of the national secretariat by those he called thugs.

The development is coming a day after an Abuja court removed Abure as national chairman in an order that also affected some other national officers. The move was, however, countered by another court in Edo State which ruled that Abure and other national officers of the Labour Party should not be removed from their offices further stoking the crisis in the party.

The move is coming in the face of moves by the party to exert what it claims as its mandate in the last presidential election which it claimed was stolen by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi in a series of tweets late on Wednesday alleged that he was also under pressure to abandon his supposed mandate and to leave the country.
