Eid-el-Fitr: DSS Arrests Gunmen On Attack Mission In North, Warns Citizens
The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has arrested two gunmen in Kano state.
Peter Afunanya, the DSS spokesperson, said in a statement that the gunmen were arrested on Thursday.
Afunanya said the operatives seized two AK-47 assault rifles; two empty AK-47 magazines; a red boxer motorcycle; and a sack of yams in which the guns were concealed.
He said the suspects were in transit to deliver the arms for a planned attack in one of the states in northern Nigeria.
He said the development underscores the need for citizens to be extra vigilant and report any unusual or suspicious movements, persons, or acts to security agencies nearest to them.
“Operators and patrons of fun, hospitality, and tourism centres are enjoined to be cautious during the festive periods,” Afunanya said.
“They should scale up measures to ensure the safety of their facilities.
“However, the service wishes the Muslim faithful, peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
“It pledges to work with sister agencies and other stakeholders to emplace adequate security during and after the events.”
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has charged the commissioners of police and tactical commanders in all the states of the federation, and the Federal Capital Territory and their supervisory AIGs to beef up security ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
Baba asked officers to engage in critical assessment of threat-prone areas, thorough stop and search, raids on black spots, and other anti-crime strategies capable of sustaining peace and public safety in Nigeria.
