Nigeria To Conduct Lassa Fever Vaccine Clinical Trials
The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed plans to undertake a clinical trial for a Lassa fever vaccine in the country. Ifedayo Adetifa, director-general of the NCDC, said this on Tuesday, May 2.
Speaking at a Lassa fever research colloquium and workshop, Adetifa said the later stages of the clinical trials, with focus on immunity and efficacy, among other things, would be carried out in Nigeria.
The workshop was organized by the NCDC in collaboration with University College London and the Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetric.
The Lassa fever centers in Irrua, Edo state, Owo, Ondo state, and Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, among others, are among the trial locations.
Adetifa added that the colloquium’s main goal was to strengthen group efforts to combat Lassa fever by disseminating fresh perspectives, academic discoveries, and industry-recognized best practices in the areas of epidemiology, case management, prevention and control, and molecular research.
He said;
“Additionally, we hope to identify national Lassa fever research priorities to guide the development of the next 5-year Lassa fever research agenda for Nigeria. As at April 23, a total of 4,908 suspected cases, 897 confirmed cases and 154 deaths had been recorded in 26 states.”
