World Press Freedom Day: My Government Protecting Journalists – Buhari
On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that his administration has ensured press freedom making a contrast with his unpopular restriction of the media during his first advent as a military general.
President Buhari expressed satisfaction that “the rights of Nigerian journalists have been protected and upheld in the past eight years” in a statement in the wake of the celebrations marking the day on May 3.
The World Press Freedom Day this year has the theme, “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights.”
The President described the day set aside for it as a landmark tribute to media professionals, who risk their lives to keep society informed and educated.
He said;
“We have kept the faith. We have ensured that Nigerian journalists have had unfettered freedom to practice their art, and on this occasion of World Press Freedom Day, we recommit to that resolution, even as we wind down in office.”
He urged those working in the media to uphold their patriotism, contribute to national unity, and responsibly utilize their freedom.
GWG.ng reports that as a military general, Buhari was known for his aversion for press freedom as against his enthisiasm this time as reflected in his message marking World Press Freedom Day.
