The United States Embassy in Nigeria has confirmed reports of an attack on US security agents in Anambra State on Tuesday with about four persons being killed. Details of the attack remain have not been fully disclosed but GWG.ng reports that the attack was reported to have occurred in the Ogbaru area of the state.

The US mission confirmed the incident in a response to Prime Business Africa, an online news portal that first reported the incident.

A US Mission spokesperson in Nigeria confirming the attack to PBA disclosed that the mission was presently working with Nigeria security forces on the development.

“Dear (Prime Business Africa), Thank you for your inquiry.  We confirm there was an incident on May 16 in Anambra state,” the U.S. Nigeria Mission response to the PBA inquiry reads.

“U.S. Mission Nigeria personnel are working with Nigerian security services to investigate.  The security of our personnel is always paramount, and we take extensive precautions when organizing trips to the field.  We have no further comment at this time.”

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government is yet to make any public declaration on the attack and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

GWG.ng reports that Anambra State has been scourged by attacks by groups normally described as unknown gunmen and the attack on the US security team may have brought a new dimension to the issue of gunmen attack in Nigeria’s southeast.

Meanwhile, there are also claims that the US security team may have been part of a medical outreach to a community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state spearheaded by UNICEF.

A Punch report quoted a source as saying:

The source said, “They were ambushed and about four of them were gunned down, while others sustained various degrees of injuries as they escaped with their vehicle that has the inscription, UNICEF.

“Among the victims were whites and blacks officials who were on a medical outreach to the rural riverine areas.”
