The outgoing President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan has been urged not to fuel vendetta against the aspiration of Senator Godswill Akpabio as his successor by dragging in issues pertaining to the tenure of the former Akwa Ibom governor in the Ministry of Niger Delta.

Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Eseme Eyiboh gave the advice as he hailed the aspiration of Akpabio for Senate President and Jibrin Barau as his deputy as the balanced diet required to push the National Assembly forward.

GWG.ng reports that the caution from Eyiboh came against the background of allegations of the Senate reviving past issues with Akpabio with the setting up of a special panel to probe the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. Akpabio was supervising minister during the period the senate is probing.

Responding to the development, Eyiboh, a former member of the House of Representatives speaking during an interview on AIT Kakaaki programme on Friday morning said:

“If it is because he had a supervisory role over the NDDC, I expected the Senate under the watch of the Senate President to have used the allowances of the oversight to tamper with any misgiving he had ..but currently, for him to bring up that issue is like a vendetta that goes beyond the issue of the management of public funds in Nigeria’s interest.

“If the current Senate President has any problem with the nomination of Godswill Akpabio as the president of the Senate, I would want to say that it is a moment and a time for a transition that should be able to promote growth.

“If you are exiting office you should not see yourself as exiting finally, and that your successor is going to undertake reprisal,” Eyiboh said in urging Senator Lawan to be open towards Akpabio as a possible successor.

Noting Akpabio’s inclination towards development, Eyiboh who said that the former Akwa Ibom governor has a weakness for development and would give his limbs for such said:

“There are people in this country who are not ready to excel in development, they want business as usual. There are people in this country who are more interested in the development of strong men and not strong institutions and Akpabio is not in that cubicle.

“So, those people will naturally be afraid of Akpabio’s senate presidency because they are going to be innovations, he is going to trigger those things that will trigger seamless governance from the legislature,” Eyiboh said in hailing Akpabio’s capacity to break barriers to achieve progress.

“With Akpabio there will be no banana peel because he is going round to everybody. He wants to preside over a Senate that no Nigerian will disown and in doing that it is an invitation to ask you to keep your eyes on the ball that under his watch that Nigeria is going to move forward.”
