The FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Directorate (RUWASSA) has disengaged the services of its Project Consultant, Messrs S.Y. Engineering Ltd., in charge of the construction of public toilets in the territory.

The Agency in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, said this decision became necessary following the company’s failure to follow agreements between the two parties since November 2021.

It noted that many infraction cases were recorded in the project implementation, hence the need to terminate future engagements.

The statement quotes the Executive Director, FCT RUWASSA, Dr Mohammed Dan-Hassan as alleging that the contractor’s negligence had led to some already built public toilets being demolished.

“We are terminating our engagement with the contractor in charge of the project on construction of public convenience in the FCT due to poor coordination and other issues.

“We have had issues of double allocation of toilet sites, some of the places were not identified properly, leading to the demolition of some already built toilets.

“The firm has failed to consummate and execute requisite documents to establish the terms of engagement and agreement between the two parties, leading to poor coordination and management of the Project.

“It is against this backdrop that RUWASSA withdrew the earlier offer of engagement made to S.Y. Engineering Ltd, with this development.

“The firm has no capacity to act for or on behalf of RUWASSA in anything relating to public Convenience Project and other matters in the FCT”.
Dan-Hassan explained that the agency was not only going to construct the toilets, but would ensure that there was behavioural change among the residents.

NAN recalls that the Federal Capital Territory Administration through FCT RUWASSA, had pledged to construct 10,000 public toilets in strategic locations across the territory to improve sanitation and hygiene in the nation’s capital. (NAN)
