Omo-Agege Under Pressure As Ojougboh’s APC Faction Makes New Allegations
Erstwhile deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was under pressure from the Dr Cairo Ojougboh-inspired factional leadership of the party in Delta State on Thursday after he was accused of failing to deliver President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
The factional executive in a statement made available to GWG.ng tasked Omo-Agege to explain why the APC which won 30% of the votes in 2019 could not get 25% of the votes for Tinubu in 2023.
Even more, the factional executive accused the Omo-Agege tendency of working out a deal with Obidients in Delta to project himself and his followers in the governorship and other polls at the expense of Tinubu in the presidential election.
The allegations were immediately dismissed by the Omo-Agege group which alleged that the Ojougboh led tendency was unknown as it insisted that he had been expelled from the APC.
The Omo-Agege group in its plea blamed the poor showing of the APC in the presidential election in Delta on the Obidient phenomenon which it said more than decimated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which is the ruling party in the state.
The accusations against Omo-Agege were articulated by the factional executive which also alleged threats to the lives of party leaders including State Chairman, Hon Isaac Ulebor, State secretary, Inana Micheal, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh and other members of the state executive for their stance against Omo-Agege.
While reacting to a recent advertorial in a national newspaper of June 22, 2023, the factional state executive in a statement issued by Secretary, Inana Michael, Delta North Chairman, Engr. Tom Onah, Delta South Chairman, Nelson Ogharamidiki and Delta Central Chairman, Michael Orunefe respectively, observed that Dr Ojougboh was being castigated because of his stance and boldness to speak the truth.
“In our open letter to His Excellency President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, we asked Mr. President to invite the security agencies to investigate those issues we raised in and out. This was because we are sure of what we are saying. Meanwhile, in the paid advert newspaper response, Omo-Agege and his group could not summon the courage to address the issues raised.”
While insisting that the Omo-Agege tendency worked against Tinubu in the presidential election, the factional exco said:
“It is common knowledge in the whole of Delta State, that Ovie Omo-Agege group worked against APC and President Tinubu during the Presidential elections. Omo-Agege, Peter Obi and the Obedient movement went into an alliance to support Peter Obi for the Presidential election and support Omo-Agege for the Governorship.
“There were billboards and banners of him and the Labour Party candidate all over the State. One such was in the Kwale- Asaba road, with the pictures of Obi/Datti for President, Omo-Agege/Osenabi for Governor and Deputy Governor.
“We are using this opportunity to challenge the Party National Headquarters to show Nigerians proof of filled forms and payments by them with which they paid for forms as required by the Party’s constitution. Mr. President is submissively invited to look into the above and order a restructure of Delta State APC in preparation for the 2027 general elections,” the state chapter said.
Challenging Omo-Agege to explain why Tinubu failed in the presidential election in Delta with him as the Deputy President of the Senate, the faction said: “let Omo-Agege tell Nigerians how the same APC that got over 30% in the 2019 Presidential elections in Delta State, couldn’t even manage to garner 25% during the 2023 Presidential elections when the State has a DSP, who hijacked the entire party structure.”
Responding, an associate of Senator Omo-Agege dismissed the claims saying that there is no faction of the APC in Delta and that Dr Ojougboh had been expelled from the party as he sought to make nought of the pressure on the former DSP as per failure to deliver Tinubu in Delta.
“First, let me say that Dr Ojougboh was expelled by his ward and the decision was endorsed by the local government executive and the state executive. So, we do not recognize him as a party member.”
“Second, we do not have factions of the APC in Delta and it is only an imagination of the people who are portraying the faction. It is not on ground and we cannot address them as an entity.
“Third on the issue of failure to deliver, we all know what happened in the country and especially in Delta as per the Obidients. They overwhelmed everyone and you can see how Okowa even as presidential running mate of PDP failed to deliver the state to the PDP. I challenge Cairo (Ojougboh) to say if he delivered his polling unit to the APC. I delivered my own, many state leaders delivered their units and Omo-Agege delivered his unit and ward, but what of Cairo?
“Even more, let him come and show us where he campaigned for Tinubu in Delta,” the Omo-Agege associate said in pushing aside the pressures from the Ojougboh-led tendency.
GWG.ng reports that Ojougboh and Omo-Agege had been in a tussle over the affairs of the APC in Delta State. Dr Ojougboh had accused Omo-Agege of high-handedness in the affairs of the APC after he took over the structure and allegedly drove out other party leaders.
Ojougboh had added that most party leaders voted against Omo-Agege in the governorship election with the notable exception of himself. He said that he begrudgingly voted for Omo-Agege out of party loyalty.
