Sarkin Hausawa, Wife In DSS Custody Over Links To Emefiele
The Arewa Council of Chiefs in Lagos on Monday called for the immediate release of Sarkin Hausawa, Lagos and his wife from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) following reported links between him and the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele.
The chiefs lamented that the Sarkin Hausawa of Lagos and Chairman of the Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Aminu Idris Yaro, and his wife have been detained by the DSS for the past three days.
The group also expressed disappointment that Yaro and his wife have also been kept incommunicado since they decided to honour an invitation by the DSS.
The Council of Chiefs, in a statement by their spokesperson and Jarman Lagos, Yerima Shettima, said they understand that Alhaji Yaro is being held in connection with the ongoing investigation of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
While describing Yaro as honest and transparent, they demanded his immediate release or access to his lawyer among others.
According to the group “The Council is not unaware of the friendship relationship between Sarkin Hausawa and Mr Godwin Emefiele just the way Emefiele is friends with many other chiefs and dignitaries all over the country and around the globe.
‘What is regrettable is however, the unexplained connection of a friend with the ongoing investigation of Mr Emefiele who till this moment, as far as the public is concerned, is only being accused of possession of an unlicensed firearm’.
The group described the continuous detention of Sarkin Hausawa as repugnant to the sensibilities of traditional rulership.
“While the Arewa Council of Chiefs does not dispute the prerogative of the DSS and any security service in the country to invite any person it deems useful for any of its investigations, we, however, find the detention of the Sarkin Hausawa incommunicado and beyond the lawfully allowed 24 hours by the DSS, repugnant to the sensibilities of the traditional rulership system, the Arewa community and the Council of Chiefs”.
The group demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Yaro and his wife from detention and immediate access to legal representation, medical attention, and family members.
In the alternative, the Arewa group urged the operative of the DSS to charge him to a competent court of law in accordance with the provisions that invalidate the indefinite detention of persons without trial.
