Widely regarded as one of the best female goalkeepers in the game, and renowned for her prowess in saving penalties, Nigeria’s Nnadozie Chiamaka produced another outstanding performance to help the Super Falcons to a 0-0 draw against fancied Canada in Nigeria’s opener at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

They came up against 7th-ranked Canada in the first match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Their ninth appearance on the global stage couldn’t have begun any tougher than against the current Olympic champions Canada.

However, defensive resilience and a solid display helped the Super Falcons earn a draw in their first game. That was despite a red card to debutant 19-year-old Deborah Abiodun. The Super Falcons came out with a point thanks to their goalkeeping hero Nnadozie Chiamaka who denied Christine Sinclair from the spot to preserve her clean sheet.

Nnadozie Chiamaka, 22, proved her heroics in a penalty situation once again which earned her the player of the match award, deservedly after a stunning overall performance.

However, it is not the first time she has showcased her ability to keep out penalties as she helped the Falconets to win the gold medal at the African Games in Morroco in 2019.

She saved a record-breaking three penalties in the shootout against Cameroon. Her superhuman abilities in between the sticks will surely be the determining factor as well as a major factor to helping the Super Falcons go far in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

GWG.ng reports that before now she had won acclaim in the French Women league when as a 21-year old Chiamaka Nnadozie kept 13 clean sheets in 19 league appearances for Paris FC in the French top-flight in 2022, a feat many are praying she will repeat at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
